Social Media has the potential to bring about real social change I believe social media can bring real changes to our society. We can share our opinions and raise a voice to bring awareness about issues in society. Social media informs, educates, and updates people about real issues, and current topics in today society. It is a way to bring people together. Through social media communication we can have a great amount of support from all around the world. It brings an issue out in the open for people that have the same interest or concern in the topic to support and make change. For example, in Soudi Arabia, the Women2Drive campaign was supported by Hilary Clinton through social media. This helped draw the attention to the government about that concern. Social media is a strong influential tool. People can post pictures, videos, and articles to bring attention to raise an issue or problem. It shows society evidence that can help to make changes. Through social media, we can ask for donation for great causes such as a fatal disease, medical expenses, and even loans that will be paid back. I disagree with Malcom’s statement about loose networks of people that do not know each other can not make real social changes. You don’t need to know one another to come together for a good cause or change. People need to have the common interest or concern about an issue and can come together to make changes and give support through social media. People in this day run multimillion dollar business with people they have never met, but only through internet networking and connection. Another example is, World Wide Fund’s involvement in the multiple hydro power plants in Montenegro’s Moroca River. They address their concern that the plant will be unsafe for the environment. They used online petitions and facebook to bring awareness and to help stop the project. The project was called off. This is a great example abut how influence social media can be on society to bring change. If social media is used in the right way, you can increase and grow the amounts of supporters to bring social change in society. “You are the change you wish to see in the world” Mahadma Gandhi
